Truro MA Community Profile & History
Truro, Massachusetts is a historic summer resort community on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Settled as the northernmost portion of Eastham in 1700, Truro was officially separated and incorporated in 1709.
Fishing, whaling and shipbuilding made up the town's early industry, but the harsh tides of the Lower Cape began to decimate Truro's main port in the 1850s, sending its economy into decline. Over the next few decades, Truro emerged as an upscale resort town, and several expansive estates were constructed amid the rolling hills and dunes of its coast.
Among Truro's historical attractions is Cape Cod Highland Lighthouse. First erected in 1797 and rebuilt 60 years later, it is the oldest lighthouse on Cape Cod. Truro is committed to preserving its rural charm, and strict zoning efforts by the town government have limited commercial development in the area.
A short drive from the bustling suburbs of eastern Massachusetts but a world away in character, Truro offers a rustic atmosphere, gorgeous natural scenery and over 300 years of rich history.
