Townsend MA Community Profile & History
Townsend, Massachusetts has a rich history dating back to the 1732, when it was incorporated. The town's first mill was built in 1733 at "Townsend Harbor," actually a pond created when a dam was built for the mill. Stagecoaches began running routes to Boston and Keene, New Hampshire in 1806; passengers dined at the Joslinville Tavern, now 519 Main Street. The Conant House, Grist Mill and Cooperage are among the popular historical landmarks that can be visited today in the Harbor.
Townsend is a member of the Middlesex Regional School District, and students from kindergarten to 12th grade attend schools in the town. Many town and school sponsored activities are held at the High School and Hawthorne Brook Middle School facilities.
The Town Common hosts Fall Fairs and art shows as well as summer band concerts. Squannacook River provides opportunities for boating, fishing and swimming. Willard Brook State Park offers picnicking and swimming; the park and Townsend State Forest both feature excellent trails for hiking and cross country skiing.
