Stoughton MA Community Profile & History
Stoughton, Massachusetts is a medium-sized suburban community with great ethnic and religious diversity. Located twenty miles southwest of downtown Boston, the town is primarily residential with an excellent range of commercial properties that provide jobs, economic prosperity and non-residential tax dollars.
Originally settled in 1713, the town was named for William Stoughton - chief justice of the notorious Salem Witch trials - and incorporated in 1726. The town is also notable as the home of America's oldest choral society, founded in 1786 and still performing today.
The community takes pride in the Stoughton Technology Center, world headquarters for a major manufacturer of footwear as well as many family-owned businesses. Stoughton is a very comfortable community in which to live and work, with excellent schools and a wide variety of civic services available to residents. Cultural, athletic and social activities are numerous and homes reasonable and affordable.
An excellent place to live for those commuting to Boston, the town is easily accessible to downtown Boston by both MBTA commuter rail and by interstate highways, with MBTA rapid transit a short drive away. These same interstate highways (Routes 24, 93 and 95) also bring the town within an easy commuting distance of most suburban job locations.
