Stoneham MA Community Profile & History

Stoneham, Massachusetts is a suburban town just 15 minutes' drive north of Boston. Founded nearly four centuries ago, it has grown into a thriving bedroom community for the Greater Boston region which enjoys park areas, the Stone Zoo, a municipal skating arena, a municipal nine-hole golf course and a par three golf course. Through both public and private sponsorship, the town emphasizes youth participation in sports and other activities. Stoneham is fortunate to house the New England Memorial Hospital, a full service facility, located entirely within its borders. The town is presently in the process of renovating the central business district with the active participation of the community.

First explored by Governor John Winthrop and a small expedition in 1632, the community was settled as a part of Charlestown in 1645. In 1725, the community was separated from Charlestown and incorporated under its present name. Predominantly rural throughout the colonial era, Stoneham emerged as a shoe-manufacturing center during the Industrial Revolution. Though the shoe industry went into decline during the early decades of the 20th century, the town's fortunes continued to grow as pharmaceutical manufacturer E.L. Patch became the area's largest employer. After World War II the town again became predominantly residential in nature, with several small businesses throughout the downtown area. The community is widely noted as the hometown of two Olympic athletes: figure skater Nancy Kerrigan, who won the silver medal in 1994, and hockey player Frank O'Grady.
