Southbridge MA Community Profile & History
Southbridge, Massachusetts conveniently situated near the cultual nexus of the city, is the nucleus of a scenic, semi-rural region. Southbridge was originally settled in 1730. Water power from the Quinebaug River made Southbridge a good location for saw and grist mills in the 1700s and textile mills in the 1800s. The growth of industry in the town drove an influx of immigrants, mostly unskilled laborers of Irish, French-Canadian, Italian and Polish descent.
The town has a long history of manufacture of optical products; early in the 20th Century, when American Optical Company was growing, Southbridge was nicknamed "Spectown”. Today Southbridge is a major center for fiber optics technology, as well as cutlery and hand tools.
Southbridge has worked hard to renovate and revitalize the downtown area. Many ethnic groups are part of Southbridge's history and present life. French Canadians, Italians, Irish, Polish, Greek, Albanian, Armenian, Romanian, Hispanic and Laotian populations contribute to the heritage and diversity of the town. With the ever-growing tapestry of ethnic groups, churches and religious institutions play a big part in the town's life.
Southbridge offers a modern, full service hospital, an active cultural center, a YMCA with indoor pool and programs for all ages (including lakefront summer camp), active sports leagues and three parks. Housing stock is plentiful. Education is a priority, with three elementary schools and a junior high school emphasizing the basics while the high school and a regional vocational technical high school prepare students for the working world and entry into college.
Opportunities for civic, service, religious and cultural participation are abundant and diverse, and citizens partake of recreational activities both locally and regionally. These and other opportunities and services contribute to a quality of life that is appreciated and enjoyed by the entire community.
