Roslindale MA Community Profile & History
Roslindale, Massachusetts is a neighborhood of Boston, situated southwest of the downtown area and bordered by Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park, West Roxbury and Mattapan. The neighborhood, sometimes referred to as "Rosinopoulos" by residents for its large Greek population, began life as a classic streetcar suburb. The railroad, built after the Civil War, prompted rapid commercial development through the turn of the century. Once known as "South Street Crossing" due to its location at the railroad's intersection with South Street, the neighborhood was renamed in honor of Roslin, Scotland at the suggestion of well-traveled resident John Pierce in the 1880s. Today, one of the most unique characteristics of the area is the sheer number of people from all races, backgrounds and countries who call it home. Roslindale Square, the heart of the neighborhood, is the subject of a National Trust for Historic Preservation Main Street award. It is considered to be an example of the value of historic and aesthetic preservation in economic revitalization. Other attractions in the neighborhood include the nationally renowned Arnold Arboretum, which features thousands of different species of plants across a gorgeously designed landscape with four greenhouses, a library and an extensive pathway system.
