Richmond MA Community Profile & History
Richmond, Massachusetts is a small town in the scenic Berkshire region of western Massachusetts. First settled as a part of Stockbridge in 1756, Richmond was officially incorporated in 1765. Agriculture served as Richmond's primary economic activity until 1829, when iron ore was discovered in the surrounding hills. A small mining industry persisted through the early 20th century; several surviving buildings make up the historic Richmond Iron Works District today. Now primarily residential in nature, Richmond is conveniently situated near several state parks and recreation sites. With a growing number of visitors and seasonal residents from New York City and the Boston area, Richmond is a wonderful place to live, work and relax.
