Provincetown MA Community Profile & History

Provincetown, Massachusetts is a historic town on the northern tip of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Settled in about 1700, Provincetown was incorporated in 1727 and remained a fairly quiet town until after the American Revolution, when it emerged as a fishing and whaling center.

By the 1890s, Provincetown had begun to develop a resident population of writers and artists as well as a summer tourist industry. After the 1898 Portland Gale severely damaged the town's fishing industry, members of Provincetown's art community took over many of the abandoned buildings. By the early decades of the 20th century, the town had acquired an international reputation for its artistic and literary output.

Today, Provicetown is a thriving resort community with an active population of artists and writers and three resident theater companies. With beautiful beaches, numerous shops and galleries, a historic town center and year-round civic festivals, Provincetown offers a bounty of recreational and cultural opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
