Northborough MA Community Profile & History
Northborough, Massachusetts was originally part of the Town of Marlborough, then Westborough. It became a full-fledged town with the right of representation at the Great and General court of Boston in 1775.
Early churches of Massachusetts were the center of all town activity. They were called "meeting houses" and the first one was built on land given by Captain James Eager which is where the First Congregational Unitarian Church is today. The only religion tolerated within the Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony was that of the Congregational Church. At that time, the Congregational Church had Calvinist tenets.
The legally elected officers of the town were the church "tithing men" and town ministers were the arbiters of both town and family life. They had strong influence in the conduct of schools. The schools were the last to be set up in the town as they were not nearly as important to the founding fathers as was the church.
Today, Northborough now operates under its own home rule character. The governing bodies of the town are the five elected members of the town's select board and the town meeting membership of registered voters. Today, although Northborough hosts a burgeoning research and development-oriented industrial park, the town primarily serves as a residential area.
