North Adams MA Community Profile & History

North Adams, Massachusetts is a small city in the scenic Berkshire region of western Massachusetts. Best known as the home of the largest contemporary art museum in the United States, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, North Adams has in recent years become a center for tourism, culture and recreation. Originally settled as a part of Adams in 1737, North Adams was incorporated as a separate community in 1878.

Emerging as a regional leader in manufacturing and industry in its early years, North Adams served as the headquarters for the Sprague Electric Company from 1942 to 1985. A research and development giant responsible for several high-tech weapons and aerospace projects bankrolled by the U.S. government, the company employed more than a quarter of the city's residents at its height. In 1986, just a year after the factory's closure, Williams College Museum of Art director Thomas Krens and North Adams Mayor John Barrett III conceived a plan to convert the empty buildings into a contemporary art center. Supported by of the Massachusetts state legislature, several private contributors and the community, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA) opened its doors in 1999. The museum has spurred a cultural and economic renaissance in North Adams and the region, with several new restaurants, art galleries and shops opening in the downtown area in the past five years.

While the downtown arts community has drawn the most attention over the past decade, the city of North Adams offers many other attractions on and off the beaten path. Natural Bridge State Park contains the only natural white marble arch in North America. The surrounding peaks of the Berkshires offer bountiful opportunity for hiking, sightseeing and oudoor recreation. The scenic Mohawk Trail, now a part of Massachusetts Route 2, reaches its terminus in North Adams at the Western Summit of Mount Williams, while Mount Greylock, the state's highest peak, rises just to the south of the city.
