Needham MA Community Profile & History
Needham, Massachusetts is an affluent, highly suburbanized community in the Greater Boston region. Ideally situated along the Route 128 corridor, the town offers a bounty of historic scenery, excellent public and private schools, a thriving economy, and plentiful opportunities for recreation and leisure. Characterized by a highly diverse population, the town promotes intercultural activities and multicultural awareness for residents and public school students alike.
Needham was originally settled as part of the Dedham Grant in 1680. It was incorporated separately in 1711, taking its name from a village in Suffolk, England. In the 1770s, settlers in the western portion of town formed the West Parish in order to circumvent the long route to the town center. In 1881, the West Parish was incorporated separately as the contemporary town of Wellesley.
In 1857, the city of Boston undertook the enormous project of filling in the tidewater flats of the Back Bay to create new land. Most of the landfill used to create the Back Bay neighborhood was obtained from Neeedham. Railroad contractors Gross and Munson built a 6-mile stretch of railway between the community and Boston; for the next 25 years, 35-car trains traversed the route 16 times a day in order to complete the massive task.
In the early decades of the 20th century, the construction of Route 128 precipitated a period of major industrial and residential development throughout the region. Gristmills and factories were replaced by high-tech firms and corporate headquarters, though several historic homes and landmarks in the town center have been carefully preserved. Over the past decade, the town has not only retained but increased its attractiveness and desirability for residence and business alike and stands today as an economically, socially and culturally viable portion of Greater Boston. Housing values remain strong; prospective residents can choose from a wide range of properties. Single-family housing predominates, but there are apartments, two-family homes and condominiums as well.
