Monterey MA Community Profile & History
Monterey, Massachusetts is a small town in the scenic Berkshire region of western Massachusetts. First settled as a part of Housatonic Township Number One in 1739, the town was officially incorporated as Tyringham in 1767. In 1776, General Henry Knox rode through Monterey, carrying cannons from Fort Ticonderoga in New York to aid in ending the Siege of Boston. The path he took is now known as the Knox Trail and is coterminous with Massachusetts Route 23. In 1847, the community split from Tyringham and was incorporated as Monterey in honor of a famous Mexican-American war battle.
Largely rural in nature today, Monterey is known primarily for its recreational areas and its natural beauty. Local attractions include pristine Lake Garfield and Lake Buel, Beartown State Forest, and historic Bidwell House Museum.
