Merrimac MA Community Profile & History

Merrimac, Massachusetts takes its name from the river that surrounds its southern boundary, but it is unclear why they do not share the same spelling.

The town was first settled by Europeans in the late 1650's, and the colonists' main crop was corn. As the town grew, Merrimac residents also pursued maritime trades, fishing for salmon and sturgeon and shipbuilding; the town also acted as a distribution point for sugar and molasses from the West Indian trade.

By the 1800's, the principal industry was carriage making, with as many as thirty-one different carriage factories operating in Merrimac at one point. The late nineteenth century left its mark with charming red brick buildings that now house a number of contemporary businesses - service, retail and restaurants.

As small industries receded in the 20th century residents found employment in neighboring cities, and by the Second World War Merrimac was principally a residential community. Merrimac occupies nine square miles, most of which is residential with typical small town New England flair.
