Longmeadow MA Community Profile & History
Longmeadow, Massachusetts has a population of more than 15,000, which continues to grow each year as people are attracted to this fast developing town. Longmeadow is located close to the Springfield, MA and Hartford, CT.
The town was settled by Springfield residents in the late 1640's; early inhabitants subsisted on a primarily agriculural economy. Until the early 18th century, townspeople turned to Springfield for industrial, religious and educational needs, since a lack of fertile land and water power sources inhibited Longmeadow's commercial growth.
In 1716, however, the first meetinghouse in town was built near the junction of Longmeadow and Williams Streets. Some industrial development took place during the mid-19th century, when the manufacture of gold and silver thimbles, spectacles, cloth-covered buttons and bricks provided non-agricultural jobs for Longmeadow residents.
Potential for further growth was limited, however, and by the early 20th century Longmeadow settled into its current position as the most desirable of all Springfield's residential suburbs. Proximity to two of New England's major cities combined with a rustic small-town atmosphere have long made Longmeadow an attractive destination for relocating families.
The Longmeadow school system includes three elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. It also has many private academies and schools for students.
