Lee MA Community Profile & History
Lee, Massachusetts is a small town in western Massachusetts. Nestled amidst the scenic Berkshire Mountains, Lee was settled on land originally belonging to the Mahican Indians in 1760. Initially known as Dodgetown, the town was subsquently named for General Charles Lee and incorporated in 1777. Staple industries of Lee's early years included lumber, agriculture, and textiles. Over the course of the 19th century, the town emerged as a leader in papermaking; the Housatonic River, flowing through the center of town, powered as many as 25 paper mills in Lee by the year 1857. While most of Lee's paper mills have since closed, several fine examples of period architecture remain. The Appalachian Trail runs just east of town, and together with the many state parks nearby offers excellent hiking amidst lush forests, mountain streams, rock formations and majestic vistas. With gorgeous natural surroundings, a historic downtown and bountiful opportunities for recreation and leisure, the town of Lee has become a popular tourist destination in recent decades, with a number of bed and breakfast establishments serving visitors in all seasons.
