Jamaica Plain (Boston) MA Community Profile & History
Jamaica Plain (boston), Massachusetts is a historic neighborhood of Boston. Founded by Puritans seeking farmland to the south of Boston, the neighborhood was originally part of the now-defunct town of Roxbury. Nationally known for its gorgeous "Emerald Necklace" of parks, the neighborhood is home to a thriving community of artists, graduate students, political activists and professionals. The local real estate market continues to thrive as dozens of historic homes and commercial buildings are converted into condominiums. Home to dozens of historic sites, this strikingly colorful neighborhood offers affordable housing options, boundless cultural opportunities and a long-standing tradition of civic participation.
Throughout the 18th century, the farms of Jamaica Plain served Boston's rapidly growing population, and a number of wealthy men built estates in the neighborhood. With the arrival of the railroads in the mid-19th century, the neighborhood emerged as one of the nation's first "streetcar suburbs". A small industrial center developed along the new rail line through the Stony Brook valley, with soap factories, chemical factories and tanneries among the new establishments. Several breweries opened in the 1880s, employing large numbers of German and Irish immigrants in the area.
In the late 19th century, Boston's Emerald Necklace of parks was designed and built by Frederick Law Olmsted, with much of the southern section of the connecting parkland in or bordering the neighborhood. Olmsted Park, Jamaica Pond, the Arnold Arboretum and Franklin Park have since been enjoyed by generations of residents and visitors. The largest body of fresh water in the city, Jamaica Pond offers fishing, sailing, and a scenic walking path. The 265-acre Arnold Arboretum features thousands of different species of plants across a gorgeously designed landscape with four greenhouses, a library and an extensive pathway system. Franklin Park is home to the eighteen-hole William J. Devine Golf Course, the open-air "Playhouse in the Park," tennis courts, baseball fields, and the famed Franklin Park Zoo (the largest in New England).
Diversity is the strength of "JP", to which it is lovingly referred by residents. Every ethnicity, socio-economic stratum, and sexual orientation is well represented in this neighborhood sandwiched primarily between Roxbury and Brookline. The rich diversity in JP has created a strong character of social awareness and tolerance among neighbors and residents.
