Groton MA Community Profile & History
Groton, Massachusetts is located in the Nashoba Valley area in northwestern Middlesex County. The largest town in the county, Groton is a lovely New England village nestled on the banks of the Nashua and Squannacook Rivers. The town is home to two well-known private schools, the Groton School and Lawrence Academy. Majestic antique homesteads, faded red barns, rolling apple orchards, colonial stone walls and family farm stands all contribute to Groton's charm. The community prides itself on the numerous acres within the town protected as conservation land and the open spaces for swimming, fishing, canoeing, hiking, riding and cross country skiing, as well for being the center for several cultural groups and organizations. For 27 years Groton has been home of the National Sheply Hill Horse Trials; since 1987, it has also hosted the New England Horse training championships. Both tournaments draw competitors and spectators from across the region.
