Great Barrington MA Community Profile & History
Great Barrington, Massachusetts is a scenic town in the Berkshire Region of western Massachusetts. The Housatonic River flows through the center of the community and is a major site of tourist activity and recreation. A popular resort community since the 19th century, Great Barrington offers bountiful opportunities for sightseeing, outdoor pursuits and leisure.
First settled by Europeans in 1726, Great Barrington was originally the north parish of Sheffield. Encompassing the villages of Housatonic and Van Deusenville, the community was incorporated in 1761. The arrival of the railroad brought wealthy vacationers seeking to escape the heat and pollution of the cities, and by the 1880s Housatonic had developed into a major summer resort. Several eminent families built grand estates in Great Barrington and the surrounding region; the Searles Estate, a castle-style house commissioned by Mary Hopkins, widow of railroad millionaire Mark Hopkins, is listed today on the National Register of Historic Places.
Just over the border with New York, Great Barrington offers many recreational and historic sites for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike. Popular attractions include Ski Butternut Ski Area, East Mountain State Forest, Egremont Country Club, Prospect Lake Park and the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center.
