Grafton MA Community Profile & History
Grafton, Massachusetts is a rural town on the outskirts of the Holyoke metropolitan area. Settled around 1727, the town rises into the Holyoke range of hills in the north and features a rugged terrain throughout. Granby's rough terrain hampered agricultural development; limited water resources made industrial growth equally difficult.
Despite these obstacles, settlers developed farms and some limited industries which made up Granby's economic foundation. Local farms grew grains, turnips, pumpkins and hops, and small distilleries were open by 1812 using the surplus grain produced. Dairy farming along with the manufacture of buttons and hats followed in economic importance during the 19th century.
By 1875, however, local industry had vanished and agriculture - primarily dairy farming - became the staple in Granby. Popular attractions in Granby include the huge "milk bottle" building which houses a dairy bar, the Old Grist Mill and Water Wheel, and the many local farms which offer fresh produce, flowers and crafts. Granby also retains its original meeting house green as well as a fine neoclassical library and a number of Greek revival houses.
