Gloucester MA Community Profile & History
Gloucester, Massachusetts is an exciting and diverse place, rich in maritime history and tradition. The city strives to preserve the living heritage of its fishing industry and the vitality of its working waterfront, balancing its intertwined past and future with assurance and skill. One of the top three fishing ports in the northeast, the beautiful harbor also attracts a sizeable artistic population.
One of the oldest settlements in New England, the community was founded by the "Dorchester Company," an expedition of men sent by King James I from Dorchester, England, in 1623. Predating both Salem (founded in 1626) and Boston (founded in 1630), Gloucester was in fact the first settlement in what would eventually become the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Ill-suited to endure the barren land and roiling seas of the area, the settlers deserted for Naumkeag (now Salem) in 1626. The area was eventually resettled, and the town was formally incorporated in 1642. Residents note emphatically that Gloucester is not a bedroom community, offering work to many of its residents in five industrial parks which produce everything from T-shirts to electronics and engineering. The city is equally proud of the diversity of its population, with first-generation immigrant families living comfortably alongside descendants of the earliest settlers. Nestled amidst the historic fishing villages of Cape Ann in the North Shore region of Massachusetts, the city offers miles of scenic coastline along Ipswich Bay to the north and Massachusetts Bay to the south. The city sits along the northeastern edge of the Greater Boston region, less than an hour's drive from the cultural, political, financial, educational and industrial hub of New England and well within reach of Cape Cod, the rocky shores of Maine, the mountains of New Hampshire and the ivied summer estates of Rhode Island. The city hopes to use its setting and history as a basis for balanced growth and change without losing those characteristics most loved by its residents.
