Fitchburg, Massachusetts owes its hilly landscape and natural beauty to millions of years of geological change. First settled by Europeans in the mid-1600s, Fitchburg was incorporated as a town in 1764 and as city in 1872. Around this time, it became an industrial giant, as other Massachusetts cities built up along rivers.
Fitchburg is a city rich with educational facilities including a college, a regional vocational school, a new high school and newly reorganized middle and elementary schools, and several private schools. Fitchburg has a strong emphasis on education and the arts. The city's partnership with Fitchburg State College has borne a growing number of performing arts programs and cultural events.
Fitchburg also benefits from a plethora of parks and recreation facilities, from small, neighborhood parks to large regional ones. Regional attractions including Coolidge Park, on John Fitch Highway, which features an in-ground swimming pool, athletic fields and walking trails, and Coggshall Park. Coggshall is wooded with over 200 acres of forests full of hiking trails. At the park's center is Mirror Lake, whose geese, ducks and swans delight visitors of all ages.
