Fitchburg, Massachusetts owes its hilly landscape and natural beauty to millions of years of geological change. First settled by Europeans in the mid-1600s, Fitchburg was incorporated as a town in 1764 and as city in 1872. Around this time, it became an industrial giant, as other Massachusetts cities built up along rivers.
Fitchburg is a city rich with educational facilities including a college, a regional vocational school, a new high school and newly reorganized middle and elementary schools, and several private schools. Fitchburg has a strong emphasis on education and the arts. The city's partnership with Fitchburg State College has borne a growing number of performing arts programs and cultural events.

Regional attractions including Coolidge Park, on John Fitch Highway, which features an in-ground swimming pool, athletic fields and walking trails, and Coggshall Park.
