Eastham MA Community Profile & History
Eastham, Massachusetts is a historic town on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Originally settled by the Nauset tribe, Eastham was the site of a hunting expedition by the Mayflower in 1620, which led to the first encounter between the Pilgrims and the Native Americans.
Eastham was not permanently settled until 1644, when its lands included the present-day towns of Truro, Wellfleet, Orleans and a small portion of Chatham. The town was official incorporated in 1651, at which point fishing and farming were the staples of the local economy. In 1830, the Methodist Church established a summer camp meeting ground in Eastham, drawing several visitors attendees annually and precipitating the town's emergence as a major resort area by the middle of the 19th century.
Today, Eastham is the gateway to the Cape Cod National Seashore, founded in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy to protect Cape Cod's coast from erosion and overpopulation. Bounded by Cape Cod Bay on the west and by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Eastham offers a number of beaches on both coasts along with three historic lighthouses.
Eastham's abundant scenery is enjoyed by residents and visitors alike, with panoramic views of Cape Cod Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, a host of kettle ponds, pretty country lanes and several fine examples of colonial architecture. A short drive from the bustling suburbs of eastern Massachusetts but a world away in atmosphere, Eastham offers beautiful beaches, nature trails, wide open spaces and over 300 years of rich history.
