Dennis MA Community Profile & History
Dennis, Massachusetts was named an All-American Town in 1978, and offers a striking blend of old-fashioned New England charm and modern-day conveniences. The five villages that make up the community offer scenic historic districts dating back to whaling days, a bounty of natural scenery and ocean views, and tranquil tree-lined streets winding past quaint seaside cottages. Sixteen inviting beaches lie along the warm waters of Nantucket Sound to the south and the crisp refreshing waters of Cape Cod Bay to the north. The town also offers a number of recreation trails for hiking and cycling, and well developed business districts throughout the town provide ample goods and services.
Residents of the community feel a great sense of pride in their home by the sea. The quiet little town, incorporated in 1793, was named for Josiah Dennis, a favorite local minister. As suitable land for farming was scant, the community became host to a fleet of whaling boats and a wide variety of other maritime industries by the 1800s. As the twentieth century approached and the glory days of sea captains faded, residents turned to commercial fishing and land-based industries.
This scenic resort community comes into its own during the summer months, with special events attracting visitors and residents every week. Home to the nation's oldest summer theater, the Cape Cod Playhouse, the town offers varied summer activities, with arts and craft shows, concerts on the village green and Dennis Festival Days, an annual celebration of the community's illustrious and storied heritage.
