Clarksburg MA Community Profile & History
Clarksburg, Massachusetts is a small town in the scenic Berkshires of western Massachusetts. First settled in 1769 and incorporated in 1798, Clarksburg began life as a small agrarian community. An industrial center developed along the Hoosac River, will several mills supplying gunpowder during the Civil War, though many such establishments were discontinued after one of the mills exploded in 1869.
Nestled along the Vermont border at the edge of the Green Mountain National Forest, Clarksburg remains predominantly rural in nature today. Easily accesible via Route 2, which meets Interstate 91 just east of town, Clarksburg offers breathtaking natural scenery, a rustic small-town atmosphere and excellent opportunities for recreation, sightseeing and leisure. The town is bordered on two sides by mountains, with East Mountain and Bald Mountain to the west, and the Hoosac Range to the east. Between the two, the Hudson Brook and the north branch of the Hoosac River flow through the valley, merging just south of the town line. In the northern part of the valley is Clarksburg State Park, a small recreational area. The Appalachian Trail, which offers excellent hiking and gorgeous alpine vistas, crosses from north to south through Clarksburg, passing just west of the peak of East Mountain.
