Cheshire MA Community Profile & History
Cheshire, Massachusetts is a small town in the scenic Berkshire region of western Massachusetts. First settled by Baptists from Rhode Island in 1766, Cheshire was officially incorporated in 1793. Having been the only area community to favor Thomas Jefferson in the presidential election of 1800, Cheshire attracted national attention when it sent the new president an enormous Cheshire cheese as a token of support. Weighing 1,235 pounds and measuring four feet in diameter, the cheese traveled to Washington, D.C. on a sled drawn by six horses.
A local leader in dairy farming and small manufacturing for much of its history, Cheshire has in recent years emerged as a popular tourist destination. Nestled in the Hoosic River Valley and boasting hundreds of acres of open space, Cheshire offers excellent opportunities for hiking, cycling, fishing, and cross-country skiing. The Appalachian Trail crosses through the center of town, and several wooded areas are preserved as part of the Chalet and Stafford Hill Wildlife Management Areas. The 11-mile Ashuwilltickook Rail Trail offers abundant wildlife and gorgeous views of wetlands, lush forests, Mount Greylock and the peaks of the Hoosac Range.
