Chelsea MA Community Profile & History
Chelsea, Massachusetts has a rich colonial heritage which continues to be a source of pride for its diverse residents today. Settled in 1624, the city began life as a quiet village on Boston Harbor. The Industrial Revolution transformed the city into a bustling center for manufacturing, and even the major fires of 1908 and 1973 couldn't halt its growth. Conveniently situated just minutes from downtown Boston, the city offers a bounty of historic scenery, excellent recreational options, and easy access to all of the major industrial sites and business centers of the surrounding region.
The area was first called Winnisimmet, meaning "good spring nearby," by the Massachusett tribe which once lived here. It was settled in 1624 by Samuel Maverick, whose palisaded trading post is considered the first permanent settlement at Boston Harbor. In 1635, Maverick sold all of Winnisimmet, except for his house and farm, to Richard Bellingham. The community remained part of Boston until it was set off and incorporated in 1739, when it was named after a neighborhood in London.
In 1775, the Battle of Chelsea Creek was fought here. Only the second battle of the Revolutionary War, it saw American forces make one of their first captures of a British ship. Part of Washington's army was stationed here during the Siege of Boston.
The city originally included the now-defunct community of North Chelsea, which included all of Revere, Winthrop and parts of Saugus. Reincorporated as a city in 1857, the community developed as an industrial center, producing rubber and elastic goods, boots and shoes, stoves and adhesives.
The city retains its industrial character today but also offers several recreational opportunities and facilities for residents and tourists, including a number of ballparks, playgrounds, and three National Historic Districts. Just five minutes from Logan International Airport and a short bus ride from Boston's downtown, the city maintains its strong enterprising character through a combination of pride, spirit, cooperation and leadership.
