Chelmsford MA Community Profile & History
Chelmsford, Massachusetts is a suburban community which offers the charm and close-knit atmosphere of rural New England while providing convenient access access to major contemporary cities, abundant educational and cultural opportunities, a mix of retail establishments and restaurants, and a stable and prospering business environment.
Settled by the Puritans in 1633, the town was officially incorporated in 1655. The town militia played an important role in the American Revolution at the Battle of Lexington and Concord and the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775. As the fastest-growing Massachusetts community during the 1960's, Chelmsford was transformed from a quiet farming village to a thriving suburban town in less than two decades. The community is primarily a residential commuter town with an increasing amount of commercial and industrial activity. Retail trade is concentrated in several commercial malls and the historic downtown.
The town has seen tremendous growth and change in recent years, with improved roadways, historical restorations and a burgeoning regional economy among the new developments. In 2007, the town was named as one of the nation's top 25 "Best Places to Live" by Money Magazine. This vibrant community offers outstanding local government services and is committed to providing residents with an exceptional school system, solid economic development initiatives, responsive municipal services, and a wide variety of leisure opportunities for children, adults and seniors.
