Centerville, Massachusetts is one of the seven villages of Barnstable, Massachusetts. Situated along Nantucket Sound just 3 miles west of downtown Hyannis, Centerville offers a bounty of scenic views and historical architecture. Popular attractions include Craigville Beach, which offers boating and swimming, historic Centerville Harbor, the 1865 General Store and the Centerville Historical Society Museum.Originally inhabited by the Wampanoag Indians, who called the settlement "Chequaquet" (meaning "pleasant harbor" or "village by the sea"), the land that now comprises Centerville was purchased by Myles Standish in 1648. By the early 19th century, Centerville was home to a bustling maritime trade economy, with the local cranberry bogs and saltworks providing goods for export. Several sea captains' homes still stand along Main Street today, a reminder of Centerville's seafaring past.
