Carlisle MA Community Profile & History
Carlisle, Massachusetts offers a close-knit rural setting within easy reach of Boston. Dubbed "city of the woods" by none other than Henry David Thoreau, Carlisle takes great pride in the preservation of its open space and scenic byways; today, almost 20 percent of the town's 15-square-mile area is conservation land. Just a half hour's drive from New England's largest city but a world away in atmosphere, the town offers dusty roads winding past old stone walls, pastoral meadows, a scenic town square and great expanses of lush forest. The town serves as the home of the only working cranberry bog in Middlesex County and the gorgeous Great Brook State Farm Park, with numerous hiking trails and open fields for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.
First settled in 1650, the town became a district of Concord in 1780 and was officially incorporated in 1805. The community maintains a small-town atmosphere with the enthusiastic support of its citizenry. The town also offers an excellent elementary school system; its high school, administered jointly with the neighboring town of Concord, was ranked the #1 public high school for academic performance and cost efficiency in Massachusetts by Boston Magazine in September 2008.
