Burlington MA Community Profile & History
Burlington, Massachusetts is a growing suburb in the Greater Boston region. Settled as a quiet farm town nearly four centuries ago, the community has since become a major center for trade, commerce and industry in Eastern Massachusetts. The town is conveniently located at the juncture of highways I-95/128 and Route 3, just a 20 minute drive from Boston and less than an hour from New Hampshire, the North Shore and Rhode Island. Home to a multitude of fine dining and retail establishments, several corporate offices for high-tech companies, and a bounty of recreational and historic sites, this town offers something for everyone.
Founded in 1641, the community is believed to have taken its name from the English town of Bridlingdon and was incorporated in 1799. Until the 20th century, townspeople subsisted primarily through agriculture, producing hops, rye, milk, fruit, vegetables and ham for the Boston market. While neighboring towns expanded with the arrival of the railroads, Burlington remained largely undeveloped until after World War II.
This picture changed drastically, however, as soon as Route 128 was built. The highway kicked off an enormous expansion, and between 1955 and 1965 the town was the fastest-growing in the state. In one five year period, its population tripled as residential and commercial retail development exploded. Today, popular destinations include the Burlington and Middlesex Malls; the historic Town Common and neighboring Simonds Park; the Burlington Ice Palace, an indoor skating rink; the Burlington Landlocked Forest, a 270-acre parcel with 12 miles of hiking and cycling trails, old growth forest, meadows, and abundant wildlife; a bounty of recreational fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer fields, and a skatepark. Major companies with headquarters in town include Sun Microsystems, Oracle Corporation, SAP AG and TD Banknorth.
The community is ideally situated within the state highway system. Route 95/128 runs east/west through southern portions of the town. Route 3 runs north/south through the western portion of the town. Route 93, a major interstate north/south highway, is located approximately 3 miles to the east.
