Brookline MA Community Profile & History
Brookline, Massachusetts is a jewel of a suburb. Cheek to jowl with Boston, it has managed to maintain its own identity - a unique mixture of busy streets and rolling countryside, upscale shops and village pubs, gracious apartment buildings and large estates. The town is home for legions of academic and scientific professionals, many of whom work at the nearby medical centers and educational institutions in Boston.
Settled in about 1638, the community was originally known as Muddy River and was considered part of Boston until it was incorporated separately in 1705. The town takes its name from the two brooks - Smelt Brook and the Muddy River - that originally provided its northern and southern borders. When the Emerald Necklace of parks and parkways was designed for Boston by Frederick Law Olmsted in the 1890s, the Muddy River was integrated into the Riverway and Olmsted Park, creating parkland accessible to both Boston and Brookline residents. One of the original "streetcar suburbs," the town was traversed by a multitude of railways and carriage roads by the middle of the 19th century. Situated at the juncture of several transportation networks, the historic neighborhood of Coolidge Corner features an assortment of bookstores, cafes, independent boutiques and the Coolidge Corner Theatre, a restored Art Deco movie palace dating from 1933 that screens a variety of independent and international films. The community includes several stops along the Green Line Branch of the MBTA subway system, which offers instant access to major business, retail and educational centers along with all of the Greater Boston region's recreational, cultural and historical attractions.
Brookline has staunchly refused to be absorbed by Boston, which surrounds it like a horseshoe. Among its many unusual resources, the town has its own working farm, the oldest country club in the nation, a town golf course, John F. Kennedy's birthplace, a magnificent park on a hillside overlooking Boston with a wonderful open air skating rink and marvelous transportation museum, and numerous neighborhood parks and playgrounds scattered throughout.
