Boylston MA Community Profile & History

Boylston, Massachusetts was incorporated in 1786. Boylston is a small, primarily residential community with some small businesses. A historical museum, located in the Old Town Hall building, offers a glimpse into Boylston's illustrious past. In the 19th century an industrial center formed along the Nashua River consisting of a sawmill, gristmill, clothier mill, fuller mill, oil mill, and a blacksmith shop.

This thriving community suffered an adverse transformation in the late 1890s with the building of the Wachusett Reservoir. The town lost nearly 2,800 acres of land and many believed it would be the end of Boylston. Fortunately, it was not. The resilient inhabitants rebuilt and agriculture became the primary industry with many working farms and orchards.

Boylston has always been proud of its school system. The town offers many recreational programs and runs a forestry maintenance program complete with demonstration forest at its Hillside municipal complex. This property is also the site of John B. Gough's Hillside mansion. Gough was one of the country's most renowned temperance leaders and his beautiful home in Boylston hosted many famous visitors from around the world. While residents today enjoy the peace and tranquility of the town's traditional rural charm, Boylston is promoting managed commercial growth along the Route 140 Business Corridor.
