Bourne MA Community Profile & History

Bourne, Massachusetts is a medium-sized rural community at the gateway to Cape Cod. The Cape Cod Canal bisects the community, with the Bourne, Sagamore and Cape Cod Canal Railroad bridges all lying within the town's borders. The canal is well known for its superb sport fishing, and for carrying ships flying the flags of all nations.

Nestled along the northeastern edge of Buzzards Bay, the community was first settled as a part of the town of Sandwich in 1640. The Scenic Park campground is located beneath the Bourne Bridge and is a perfect vacation spot for those seeking to enjoy the canal. The town features numerous quiet harbors and inlets for boating and bathing, and the shell fishing in the area is particularly enticing. A quiet community without the summer tourist crush experienced by many other towns on the Cape, it offers an accessible location, excellent opportunities for recreation and leisure, a bounty of historic sites and scenic views along the extensive shoreline.

Popular attractions include the Aptucxet Trading Post, founded by the Pilgrims in 1627; the National Maritime Life Center, an animal hospital and museum devoted to the medical care and rescue of marine animals stranded along the shores of the Northeastern United States; the recently completed Three Mile Look parkway, which offers a stunning array of greenery and an observation deck with picnic tables, a gazebo and excellent views of the Canal; the Pairpoint Glass Company, where visitors can watch glass blowers at work; three public beaches with excellent opportunities for swimming; and seven public boat ramps, including the popular town marina. Annual festivities include the Bourne Scallop Festival, which is held in early September each year and brings visitors from across the nation.
