Bedford MA Community Profile & History
Bedford, Massachusetts is located 15 miles northwest of Boston. Settled by the Puritans in 1640 and incorporated in 1729, the town has retained a gorgeous natural and man-made setting through the centuries. Situated in close proximity to Routes 128 and 3, the community has enjoyed significant residential and business growth in recent decades, with several high-tech companies making their home in town along the Burlington border. Just a short drive from Boston, the rustic fishing towns of the North Shore and the sandy beaches of Cape Cod, the community boasts a thriving local economy, excellent opportunities for recreation and leisure, and an outstanding quality of life.
Established nearly four centuries ago, the community offers an expansive historic district with a classic New England town common and a multitude of attractions, including the 1790 Job Lane House; the famous Bedford Flag, the oldest known surviving flag in the United States, flown during the first battle of the Revolutionary War and currently on display in the library; and several National Historic Landmarks commemorating the 1775 Battle of Lexington and Concord, where dozens of Bedford residents fought bravely. A popular destination for nature lovers is the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, a 12-mile stretch of wetlands that is home to cottontail rabbits, deer, foxes, beavers, and over 200 species of birds. Annual celebrations include "Pole Capping" in April, when the Bedford Minuteman Company re-enacts a Revolutionary era tradition, and "Bedford Day" in September, which features a parade, street fair and dancing.
Community residents enjoy outstanding municipal services. Education is a top priority, and local schools are well-known for scoring competitively by all standards. The library serves everyone and has active children's programs. A senior center, open daily, offers health and leisure services. An in-town minibus service runs weekdays.
There are recreation programs for all ages, including after-school day-care, and summer day camp. Outdoor facilities include a swimming pond, a lake for boating, a bike path to Cambridge, and walking trails through conservation lands. All services are voted by the residents at an open town meeting.
