Westbrook CT Community Profile & History
Westbrook, Connecticut is a town nestled on the banks of Long Island Sound between New Haven and New London. First settled in 1644 as part of the Saybrook Colony, Westbrook remains primarily residential in nature, though the local tourist industry continues to thrive. The Saybrook Colony itself was established as a refuge between the New London and New Haven colonies in 1635. Over time, seven present-day towns split from the original Saybrook Colony: Lyme in 1667, Old Lyme in 1678, Westbrook in 1724, Chester in 1739, Old Saybrook in 1852, and Essex in 1854.
Today, Westbrook serves as a bedroom community for the nearby cities of Hartford and New Haven along with a summer resort for many. With sandy beaches, cozy bed and breakfasts, a major shopping mall and a number of exceptional restaurants and historical sites nearby, Westbrook offers an abundance of cultural and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
