Portland CT Community Profile & History

Portland, Connecticut is a small town situated along the Connecticut River in the center of the state. Though the area was first settled around 1650, Portland was not formally established until 1841, when it was separated from Chatham and incorporated under its current name.

Portland was known first as a center for shipbuilding and later for its vast brownstone quarries, which provided economic sustenance for more than two centuries. Brownstone quarried in Portland was used in the construction of Connecticut’s original State House in 1796 along with most of the brownstone buildings in the state. Several classic brownstones still stand at Hartford’s Trinity College and Wesleyan University in neighboring Middletown. Though Portland’s brownstone quarries were abandoned after a flood in 1936, recent efforts by residents an civic groups have seen the quarries established as a historic site.

Now primarily residential in nature, Portland serves as a bedroom community for the nearby cities of Hartford and New Haven, both less than a 30 minute drive from the town center. With a commitment to its heritage and an eye on the opportunities of the future, Portland continues to grow and thrive at the outset of the 21st century.
