Newington CT Community Profile & History

Newington, Connecticut was part of Wethersfield until 1871, when it was incorporated. Early names for the area were Pipestave Swamp, then Cowplain, and later, West Farms. The names reflected the use of the land. The town was a source of staves for making "pipes" - large-sized barrels - which were used in Colonial trade. Then the town became pasture for cattle. Finally, farms were created by the early descendants of the Wethersfield settlers who had been given grants on the western frontier of the town.

By 1721, the number of new farmers settling there prompted the General Assembly to name the area Newington, which means "New Meadow Town”. The trolley car and automobile brought more growth in the 20th century. The town's central location in the state and improved highways attracted many residents and businesses. By 1966, the population had outgrown a town meeting form of government, so the council-manager form of government was adopted. The town's major businesses are milk processing and the making of airplane parts, ball bearings, dies, gauges, tools and plumbing supplies.
