New Canaan CT Community Profile & History
New Canaan, Connecticut was established in 1801. Since the Canaan Parish was not originally going to be a town, New Canaan lacked many common town characteristics. In its early days, the town did not even have a main street or town hall. The first house was built in 1825 on Oenoke Ridge. Today, this building houses the Historical Society's library.
The railroad brought many residents from New York City. Most of them built their own houses for the summer season, but eventually, many of them would stay year-round. New Canaan was primarily an agricultural community. Once the Revolutionary War was over, shoe making became a big industry. As the shoe business grew in the 19th Century, regional settlements of clustered houses, mills and schools developed into distinct district centers with the addition of a general store.
