In the late 18th Century, Meriden was such a prominent producer of silver and pewterware that it became known as "the Silver City”.

Today, Meriden is still a thriving commercial and industrial center, providing its citizens with fine services and a strong sense of community. The residents of Meriden reflect its diversity, covering a broad spectrum of occupations: skilled workers, small businessmen, professionals, and corporate managers. A fine public school system serves the needs of the city's youth. Meriden has ten city parks, a municipal golf course, two municipal swimming pools, and several tennis courts to keep the family busy and active.
