Lyme CT Community Profile & History

Lyme, Connecticut is a rural community nestled in the hills of southeastern Connecticut along the shore of the Connecticut River. The Town of Lyme has a distinct New England character and is a separate entity from the neighboring town of Old Lyme. Lyme was settled by Europeans in 1664. The Eight Mile River valley area was purchased from a Native American named Chapeto in 1669, and later, the Joshuatown area was purchased from a Native American named Josuah, who was the third son of the Indian Sachem Uncas.

Lyme now offers two small commercial centers, Hamburg Cove and Hadlyme. Lyme is home to an array of recreational attractions for residents and visitors alike, including Gillette's Castle, the Hamburg Fair and an annual Fourth of July parade.
