Farmington CT Community Profile & History

Farmington, Connecticut was founded in 1640 and incorporated in 1645 from the Tunxis Plantation, one of the largest single land grants in the colonies. By 1869, parts of Farmington had been formed into the towns of Avon, Berlin, Bristol, Burlington, Plainville, New Britain and Southington. The boroughs of Farmington and Unionville were consolidated in 1947.

Architecture in Farminton includes colonial, federalist, Greek revival and contemporary styles. Through careful planning, Farmington has retained much of the its colonial character. Streets in the historic district, known as ``the village,'' are often short, curved and one-way. The sloping lawns of the Hillstead Museum offer a first view of historic Farmington for many visitors. The museum sits along Farmington Avenue, also known as Route 4, still the main thoroughfare for many people commuting from the Farmington Valley to the city of Hartford.
