Ellington CT Community Profile & History

Ellington, Connecticut is an exciting community with a blend of rural New England charm and suburban convenience. Ellington is located in the Connecticut River Valley. Originally part of the neighboring town of Windsor, Ellington was incorporated as a separate town in 1786.

In its early years the town's economy was dominated by agriculture, though the Crystal Lake area was for several years a populoar summer resort. Beginning in the late 19th century, Ellington became the center of a community of Jewish immigrant farmers who were settled in the region by the Jewish Colonization Organization. The settlers built a synagogue, Congregation Knesseth Israel, which still hosts a Modern Orthodox congregation today and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The business community of Ellington is a blend of agriculture, small commercial, and various industrial enterprises. The dairy industry has long been a major producer of goods, and Ellington also provides products in the fields of packaging, pharmaceuticals, sporting goods, automotives, industrial designs, electronics, and printing. The community is proud of its heritage and is eager to move into the 21st Century.
