East Granby CT Community Profile & History
East Granby, Connecticut is a town of 4,700 in the Farmington Valley of central Connecticut. First settled in 1664, the area was one of four Congregational parishes in Simsbury. In 1786, the parish became a section of Granby, and the town was finally incorporated under its present name in 1858. East Granby is bisected by the Metacomet Ridge, an unusual feature that turned into a beacon for the community when copper deposits were discovered along the ridge in the early 18th century.
Soon thereafter, America's first incorporated copper mine was established in East Granby. Although the mine was largely depleted by the end of the 1700s, dairy farming soon took the place of mining as the town's staple industry. Today, East Granby enjoys status as a predominantly residential community, offering all the charm of rural New England life within easy reach of the city.
