Deep River CT Community Profile & History
Deep River, Connecticut is a small town situated along the Connecticut River in the center of the state. First settled in 1644 as part of the Saybrook Colony, Deep River remains primarily residential in nature. The Saybrook Colony itself was established as a refuge between the New London and New Haven colonies in 1635. Over time, seven present-day towns split from the original Saybrook Colony: Lyme in 1667, Old Lyme in 1678, Westbrook in 1724, Chester in 1739, Old Saybrook in 1852, and Essex in 1854.
Deep River was left as the last remaining town under the name "Saybrook" until 1947, when the name was officially changed by the state legislature. The town's name comes from a brook rising from Cedar Swamp in the village of Winthrop and winding its way down through the present-day village to the Connecticut River. Several houses dating from the 1720s survive in Winthrop, which lies in the northwestern corner of Deep River.
Today, Deep River serves as a bedroom community for the cities of Hartford and New Haven, both of which are just a short drive from the center of town. A rustic small town within easy reach of the city, Deep River offers the best of New England past and present.
