Danbury CT Community Profile & History

Danbury, Connecticut is located in southwest Connecticut along the New York border. The seventh largest city in the state, Danbury was first settled by colonists in 1685. During the Revolutionary War, Danbury served as a military supply depot for the continental army. In April of 1777, British forces under General William Tryon burned and looted the city.

In the aftermath of the attack, the will of Danbury’s residents remained strong, with the motto on the City Seal reading “Restituimus,” Latin for “We have restored.” The first hat factory in Danbury was established in 1780, and the budding industry eventually proved so successful that Danbury would be nicknamed “The Hat City” by the 19th century.

In recent years, Danbury has become one of the fastest-growing cities in Connecticut, with affordable housing, a solid industrial base and its proximity to New York City among the many factors that attract new residents. Danbury's commitment to proper economic growth and stability allows the city to serve as a hub to the entire western Connecticut region. Comprehensive revitalization efforts in the downtown and its neighborhoods are among many programs being implemented to maintain Danbury’s reputation as a great place to live, work and play.
