Coventry CT Community Profile & History
Coventry, Connecticut is "the gateway to Northeastern Connecticut's Quiet Corner". This semi-rural town offers historic sites, an herb farm, a vineyard, antique shops, two public beaches and a boat launch on Coventry's lake, as well as pleasant places to eat and relax. Coventry is also home to the historic Nathan Hale farmstead, open daily in the spring and summer for guided tours, special hands-on programs, and summer classes.
Established in 1711, Coventry boasts a rich history spanning three centuries. At the Connecticut General Assembly of 1706, provisions were set out for the creation of the town, founded on lands given to the colony by the Indian sacnhem Joshua. Coventry's W.L. Wellwood General Store was originally erected in 1787 and is believed to be one of the oldest such establishments in America.
By the 19th century, a small industrial center had built up around Coventry Lake Brook, which provided water power for local mills. While industry and attendant growth slowed by the late 20th century, Coventry now thrives as a residential community with an economic base in tourism. The illustrious past of the town's earliest settlement is preserved today in South Coventry Village, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
