Colebrook CT Community Profile & History

Colebrook, Connecticut is a small town on the Massachusetts border in northwestern Connecticut. The last town to be settled in the nascent Connecticut Colony, Colebrook was named after a town in Devonshire, England. Benjamin Horton led a small group of settlers to the area's virgin forests in 1765, and Colebrook's first house was built in 1767 by Samuel Rockwell, another early settler.

Incorporated in 1779, Colebrook saw some early industry develop with the construction of iron forges. Iron ore mined in the hills of neighboring Salisbury was transported to Colebrook, where it was wrought for use in the construction of cannons. During the Revolutionary War, the forges of Colebrook made cannons for use by the patriot army.

Today, Colebrook is largely rural in nature, with residents commuting to work in larger towns and nearby cities. Situated in close proximity to the Berkshire Range, Colebrook offers bountiful recreation opportunities, with a number of hiking trails and ski areas just a short drive away.
