Colchester, Connecticut is one of the fastest-growing towns in Eastern Connecticut. Incorporated in 1698, Colchester is centered around a traditional New England Green. Early life in the new settlement revolved around the activities of the church parish. In 1703, the General Court of the Colony of Connecticut ruled that the settlement could organized a church body here known as Colchester.
Several grist mills and saw mills were established in Colchester over the next few years, and in 1706, the first street was laid out. Then known as Town Street, the road was nearly 200 feet wide and is now the southern end of Old Hebron Road. By the 20th century, Colchester was dubbed the "Catskills of Connecticut," owing to a tourist industry boom in the 1930's.
