Clinton CT Community Profile & History

Clinton, Connecticut is a town on Long Island Sound in south-central Connecticut. First settled in 1663, the area was originally known as Homonoscitt. In 1667 the settlement was designated a town and named Kenilworth, and by the middle of the 18th century changes in usage had altered the name slightly to Killingworth.

In 1838 the southern portion of the town was partitioned off by the General Assembly and incorporated as the Town of Clinton, while the northern portion retained the name of Killingworth. Early life in Clinton revolved around the church, the farm and the sea, with a small shipbuilding industry providing additional sustenance to the local economy.

Today, Clinton is a largely residential coastal community with a strong economic basis in tourism. A town of about 13,500, it is estimated that the population of Clinton reaches 20,000 during the summer months. Located equidistant from New York and Boston, Clinton boasts an ideal location for commuters, with the cities of Hartford and New Haven situated nearby.
