Chester CT Community Profile & History

Chester, Connecticut is a small town in central Connecticut. First settled in 1692, Chester began life as the North Quarter of Saybrook. By 1740, there were enough residents in the area to prompt a petition to form Saybrook's Fourth Parish, and Chester was formally incorporated as a separate town in 1836.

Chester's steep hills and aboundant water supply made it ideal for early industrial enterprise, and several mills were established along the north and south branches of Pattaconk Brook by the early 19th century. Chester's industries included mills for grinding meal, bolting flour, and fulling cloth, along with tanneries, quarries, forges, foundries and shipbuilding.

Today, Chester is a primarily residential community, situated between the major cities of New Haven and Hartford and serving as a bedroom community for both cities. Chester remains committed to preserving its history, with recent efforts including the restoration of the Chester Meeting House and the purchase of the Mill Building, a factory built in 1850.

Chester is forging ahead in its restoration efforts at the Mill Building, which will serve as the future home of Chester Museum at the Mill. Focused on the challenges of preserving the past as a means of securing a bright future, Chester is poised to bridge the worlds of New England past and present.
